Electric Wizard Black Masses CD (Jewel Case, 2010, rise Above)

Black Masses is the seventh studio album from English doom metal band Electric Wizard, originally released in 2010 through Rise Above Records. This edition is presented in a CD jewel case and captures the band's distinctive combination of crushing doom metal riffs, heavily distorted guitars, hypnotic repetition and dark atmospheric songwriting.

Recorded between May and August 2010 at Toe Rag Studios in London, Black Masses was produced, engineered and mixed by Liam Watson in collaboration with Electric Wizard guitarist and vocalist Jus Oborn. The album continues the band's established approach to heavy, riff-driven doom while developing a more aggressive and forceful character compared with the atmospheric direction of Witchcult Today.

Black Masses features Jus Oborn on guitar and vocals alongside Liz Buckingham on guitar, Tas Danazoglou on bass and Shaun Rutter on drums. It is the only Electric Wizard studio album to feature bassist Tas Danazoglou. The lineup creates a dense combination of heavily fuzzed guitar tones, low-end weight, pounding drums and Jus Oborn's distinctive vocals.

The album includes Black Mass, Venus In Furs, The Nightchild, Patterns Of Evil, Satyr IX, Turn Off Your Mind, Scorpio Curse and Crypt Of Drugula. Tracks such as Black Mass and Turn Off Your Mind demonstrate the band's emphasis on repetitive, groove-heavy riffs, while The Nightchild adds atmospheric keyboard textures through Mellotron.

Black Masses sits within the central period of Electric Wizard's catalogue, following Witchcult Today and preceding Time To Die. The album continues the musical lineage established across releases including Come My Fanatics..., Dopethrone and Supercoven, combining traditional doom metal foundations with stoner metal heaviness and Electric Wizard's distinctive psychedelic and horror-inspired atmosphere.
