Satyricon Rebel Extravaganza CD (Digipak, 2019, Napalm Records)

Rebel Extravaganza is the fourth studio album from Norwegian black metal pioneers Satyricon, originally released in 1999 and reissued as a remastered Digipak CD by Napalm Records in 2019. The album marked a significant evolution in the band's sound, combining aggressive black metal with industrial textures, progressive structures, synthesizers and unconventional rhythms. The ten-track release opens with the expansive Tied In Bronze Chains and continues through tracks such as Filthgrinder, Havoc Vulture and Prime Evil Renaissance, establishing a darker and more experimental side of Satyricon.

The album moves beyond the traditional boundaries of Norwegian black metal through layered arrangements, atmospheric electronics and changing tempos. Supersonic Journey and The Scorn Torrent showcase the band's ability to develop longer, more expansive compositions, while Rhapsody In Filth, End Of Journey and Down South, Up North provide shorter contrasting passages. The record also features guest contributions from Fenriz of Darkthrone and Snorre Ruch of Thorns, adding to its distinctive experimental character.

For fans of Norwegian black metal, avant-garde extreme metal and experimental metal, Rebel Extravaganza offers a distinctive combination of aggression, atmosphere, industrial influence and progressive songwriting. The 2019 remastered Digipak CD is an appealing physical edition for Satyricon collectors and listeners interested in the band's transition from their earlier black metal sound toward a more unconventional and exploratory style.
