The Son Of Odin (40th Anniversary) celebrates four decades of one of the most highly regarded albums from the classic British heavy metal underground. Originally released in July 1986, Elixir's second full-length has since become regarded as a cult classic of NWOBHM and traditional heavy metal, despite arriving after the movement's original peak.

Originally formed in London in 1983, Elixir drew inspiration from classic British heavy metal alongside the emerging darker and more progressive sounds of the early 1980s. The band cited influences including the first MSG album, Judas Priest's British Steel, Mercyful Fate and Queensrÿche, combining powerful riffs, soaring vocals, melodic guitar work and an epic heavy metal atmosphere.

Elixir's debut single, Treachery (Ride Like The Wind), appeared in 1985 and received coverage in Kerrang!, helping establish the band's reputation within the British metal underground. The band also received an important endorsement from Ronnie James Dio, whose support helped encourage them to pursue their debut full-length.

The Son Of Odin was recorded in January 1986 at The Enid's The Lodge Studio and mixed several months later. The album was met with outstanding reviews, including a memorable assessment in Metal Forces describing it as a self-financed LP capable of putting many major-label releases to shame.

Although released after the traditional NWOBHM period had begun to fade, The Son Of Odin has subsequently become recognised as one of the movement's finest and most enduring cult releases. The album's combination of traditional heavy metal, melodic guitar work, powerful vocals and epic songwriting has ensured its continued appeal among collectors and fans of classic British metal.

The album was also recognised by Terrorizer, which named The Son Of Odin among its Top 20 Power Metal albums, while Sweden Rock later selected it as its Classic Album of the Month in April 2010.

This 40th Anniversary Edition goes considerably beyond a standard reissue. In addition to the complete original album, the edition includes the full recording session from which the Treachery (Ride Like The Wind) single was taken, the preceding demo and the band's BBC Friday Rock Show session.

The release also features recent interviews with guitarist Phil Denton and manager Seymour Mincer, providing additional insight into the history of Elixir and the making of The Son Of Odin.

For collectors, this High Roller Records edition has received a significant audio restoration and remastering treatment. All tracks have been remastered and restored by Patrick W. Engel at Temple Of Disharmony in October 2025, delivering the best-sounding version of The Son Of Odin to date.
