Maltuka Black Rite CD (Jewel Case, EP, 2025, High Roller Records)

Maltuka are a rising force in Norwegian thrash metal, hailing from Bergen and making a fierce first statement with their four-track debut EP Black Rite. Formed by guitarist and vocalist Viljar Brunvoll and drummer Mats, the duo first collaborated in 2016–2017 as members of Psykopath, releasing two EPs and performing live before that project came to an end. Rather than stop, the pair continued writing and refining new material, which ultimately evolved into Maltuka.

Drawing inspiration from classic thrash titans such as Metallica, Slayer and Nuclear Assault, alongside Teutonic legends Sodom and the darker atmosphere of their corpse-painted countrymen Immortal, Maltuka deliver a sharp, aggressive sound that respects tradition while adding their own identity. The result is fast, biting thrash metal with a sinister edge and modern intensity.

Lyrically, Black Rite delves into spiritual and occult themes, reinforcing the EP’s dark and ritualistic atmosphere. The striking cover artwork, based on a painting by renowned artist Kim Diaz Holm (Sólstafir, Vreid), perfectly captures the mood and aesthetic of the release.

According to Brunvoll, Black Rite represents Maltuka at their most direct and aggressive, focusing on heavier, no-nonsense songwriting. While this EP serves as a powerful introduction, the band has made it clear that their future full-length album will expand further, incorporating more dynamics and a broader range of influences.
