A Thousand Pyres, the second full-length assault from German blackened thrash duo Nocturnal Witch, marks a major step forward for the Thuringian cult act. Released five years after their debut Summoning Hell, the 2019 album pushes their sound into darker, more refined territory—without sacrificing the raw aggression that defines their craft.

While often labeled blackened thrash, Nocturnal Witch themselves avoid genre boxes entirely. As vocalist/guitarist Tyrant and drummer Baphomet explain: “We don’t think in such patterns when we write. We simply create the music we feel—and this is what comes out naturally.”

What emerged on A Thousand Pyres is a potent mix of razor-edged riffs, haunting melodies, and choruses that cut even deeper than on their debut. Tracks like the title song and “Scorn and Wrath” reveal a more melodic, dynamic approach, while “Dark Forces” delivers the kind of unforgettable hook that has become one of the band’s trademarks.

Recorded in their own Black Magic Studios using the mobile setup of Patrick W. Engel (Temple of Disharmony), and mixed/mastered by Engel himself, the album achieves a perfect balance between authentic underground grit and clear, powerful definition. No filler—just pure, focused blackened thrash intensity.
