Spartan Warrior Steel N' Chains CD (Slipcase, 2025, High Roller Records)

Originally released in 1983, Steel N’ Chains stands as one of the true underrated treasures of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Hailing from Sunderland in the UK’s north-east, Spartan Warrior only released one more studio album and appeared on a compilation before disbanding, yet their hard gigging and cult following ensured the band’s legacy never faded.

Spartan Warrior first formed when bassist Tom Spencer and drummer Gordon Webster—then playing in a local act called Deceiver—recruited vocalist David Wilkinson. His brother Neil Wilkinson and guitarist John Stormont later joined, and this early line-up recorded two tracks, “Steel N’ Chains” and “Easy Prey” (misprinted as “Comes As No Surprise”) for Guardian Records’ Pure Overkill compilation. Impressed, the label offered the band a full album deal.

With Stormont replaced by Paul Swaddle, Spartan Warrior recorded eight additional songs, completing Steel N’ Chains with the two compilation tracks. The album sold strongly and generated enough buzz to attract Roadrunner Records, who signed the band for their second LP. Although internal changes ultimately caused the band to split by the mid-80s, they eventually reformed in 2006 and have continued to appear at festivals across Europe.

Everything began with this debut: a gritty, melodic, and powerful NWOBHM classic that captures the hunger and spirit of a young band at their peak. Steel N’ Chains remains a must-have for collectors and fans of the era. Deluxe reissue, transfer and mastering by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony, May 2025.
